Developmental Reading Assessment - DRA 2
The Developmental Reading Assessment provides teachers with a method for assessing and documenting students' development as readers over time. Its purpose is to identify students' reading level, defined as a text on which students meet specific criteria in terms of accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. Additional purposes include identifying students' independent reading strengths and weaknesses, planning for instruction, monitoring reading growth, and providing information to teachers, schools, and parents regarding reading achievement. The assessments are conducted during one-on-one reading conferences as children read specially selected assessment texts. A set of leveled texts, which increase in difficulty, are used for the assessment. The DRA evaluates the major aspects of reading that are critical to independence as a reader. The major aspects of reading are; phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. The reading level expectations for the end-of-year for each grade level are as follows:
Kindergarten = Independent Level 4
1st Grade = Independent Level 16
2nd Grade = Independent Level 28
3rd Grade = Independent Level 38
4th Grade = Independent Level 40
5th Grade = Independent Level 50
6th Grade = Independent Level 60
iReady Reading and Math Online Assessment
iReady is a computer adaptive assessment that pinpoints students' strengths and next steps. Each student at Arrowwood takes a beginning of the year diagnostic, middle of the year diagnostic, and end of the year diagnostic. This allows for teachers to see who is responding to instruction and who needs something different.
- Diagnostic - Assess all students three times per year for universal screening (early identification), general education progress monitoring, and annual yearly progress accountability.
- Growth Monitor - Monitor at-risk students intermittently and evaluate the effectiveness of instructional changes.
For additional information about iReady, please visit the iReady site.
iReady Reading and Math Online Instruction
This is an individualized online tool that provides tailored instruction to meet students where they are in their learning progression. This tool targets specific skills which students are struggling most in.
Cognitive Abilities Test - CogAT
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT®) measures students' learned reasoning abilities in the three areas most linked to academic success in school: Verbal, Quantitative and Nonverbal. While CogAT is well-suited to help educators make important student placement decisions, such as selecting students for Gifted and Talented programs, exclusive features such as the Ability Profile Score can be used to expand the educational opportunities of all students. The CogAT test is offered to all students in the fall by parental choice or teacher referal. All third grade students are tested as a benchmark assessment. The results of this test are used to make instructional decisions and to determine if particular students are potential candidates for the district Discovery program which provides gifted and talented programming.
Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS)
This is the state's common assessment of student progress measured in late spring. Third through sixth grade students at AWE take the english language arts and math sections for CMAS. Our fifth grade students take Science in addition to these other two assessments. Social studies is measured periodically as well.
